Scenario

A small company with 20 computers is successfully growing the business and is hiring more people. With every new person, the manager purchases a new PC, perhaps each time from a different vendor. The network has a few hubs and it connects the users so that all of them have access to the Internet through a shared connection.

Problem

Users have different configurations, different operating systems and nobody knows exactly where information is stored. The risk of losing data has been a constant worry but now it is serious: it is affecting the balance sheet through increasingly loss of productivity caused by inconsistencies, files being overwritten, files not being found, etc.

Another growing concern is that it is becoming very difficult to find information and process it. A new financial package brings some order in place, but where is the new accounting database stored? Is it safe? Is there a backup process in place? What about all the customer contacts, employees’ schedule, marketing material, reports, etc?

Solution

These problems can be addressed with the installation of Small Business Server 2003 from Microsoft. This has a robust server operating system (Windows 2003), a database server (SQL 2000) and a mail system (Exchange 2003). The package comes with the Internet Acceleration Server that can be used to manage the gateway to the Internet (firewall, Internet access policies, etc).

The server can support up to 50 users and it is very versatile. It will support the small business to grow to the next level. If the load increases, the server can be scaled up or out to accommodate that growth. It is extremely well integrated and it works very well with Microsoft Office. Many tasks can be automated through making use of the sophisticated features that come with the new software; this can make a difference in increasing the margin of a successful small business.
